A Black History of Art
A Black History of Art was created in February 2020 and gained an audience of tens of thousands within that year. After studying no Black artists in the first year of her undergraduate degree in Art History, Alayo Akinkugbe began conducting her own personal research as a means to self-educate, posting her findings on Instagram. Defying chronology, geography and without the use of academic jargon, A Black History of Art became a candid forum for engaging with narratives which concern Blackness in art history; Akinkugbe explores subjects ranging from muses and artists to decolonisation and debates about restitution.
